“I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvellous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well.” Psalm 139:14
The Psalmist declares that his soul knows very well that God’s works are marvellous. What does my soul know very well? Deep down inside, past the pretences, beyond what anyone else can see... what does my soul know very well? It’s hard for me to admit that I am fearfully and wonderfully made but I need to know that everything God makes, including me, is wonderful and my soul needs to know that very well.
Paul talks about being “fully persuaded” and about “being confident” of things. There are some things we need to know; things we need to be confident of; things we need to be fully persuaded about our God. Because it’s in those times when we’re going through difficult situations and we begin to question God’s goodness towards us we need to remember what our soul knows very well. We need to have something we can draw from when the crisis hits. What we cultivate in the common place will be what we draw from in the crisis. So in the common place everyday life, I should be cultivating good habits; habits that will form a godly character in me. What sorts of habits you may ask? Well, a devotional life, a personal prayer life, an intercessory prayer life, reciting God’s promises to myself and letting them penetrate their truth into every fibre of my being, memorising portions of Scripture... just a few examples of what will help our souls know who our God is very well.
I challenge you today to get a piece of paper and jot down all the things that your soul knows very well. And put that piece of paper in your journal or in your Bible or somewhere where you will see it often because we always need a reminder of what our soul knows very well.
